Hey there, blog fam! Life on Saba continues to be a delightful mix of the mundane and the magical. This week’s installment involves a much-needed haircut, a Valentine’s-themed ladies’ night, and the ever-present anxiety of island travel!
It all started on Saturday. Dave was off to work, leaving me to my own devices. After a leisurely morning, I finally tracked down the WhatsApp number for the local hair salon (thanks again, Jennifer!), and I managed to snag a hair appointment for the afternoon. My last trim was way back in November, and let’s just say my ends were screaming for help.
The salon experience was…unique. Let’s just say there wasn’t a ton of conversation. My shampoo lady spoke zero English, and my hairdresser, while lovely, was a woman of few words. I did learn she’s been on Saba for 28 years after moving from The Dominican Republic! The important thing is, I emerged with a fabulous new ‘do, so I’m calling it a success.

Post-haircut, I met Dave at Colibri, where he was enjoying drinks with Duco. The staff was setting up for ladies’ night with Valentine’s-themed costumes. Naturally, I ordered a specialty cocktail and even starred in a hilarious Facebook video where a bartender pretended to check me out. Good times!
We didn’t stay out too late because Albus demanded dinner and a walk. I snuck away a bit early to thank Jennifer in person for the hair salon hook-up. Then, it was off to The Hideaway to meet Dave, who was deep in conversation with a new hire at the museum. Figured I’d leave them to their work talk.
Sunday was gloriously quiet. I booked a short trip to Sint Maarten for Dave and Chuck during Chuck’s summer visit. They haven’t had a “guys’ trip” in a while, and I thought it would be a great opportunity for them to bond. The rest of the day was spent working on my blog (that’s you!), catching up on some soapy dramas, and generally enjoying the peace and quiet. Ahhh.

Monday brought the excitement of Samantha’s impending arrival! I sent her a text to remind her that she had only one more sleep until she arrived. Work was surprisingly pleasant, with lots of complimentary clients. The only downside was the unusually high winds. I was hoping they’d subside in time for Samantha’s flight. I did warn her that if she got stuck in Sint Maarten overnight, we could easily make arrangements for her there. Always prepared, that’s me!
Of course, around 1 am, the high winds and pre-arrival jitters kept me awake. Sigh. Oh well, might as well get up and start the day.
Tuesday’s workday felt like it lasted a week, but I happily logged off early to pick up Samantha from the airport with Dave and Albus. Her flight arrived on time, and we were all thrilled to see her! Her flight from the cold north required deicing, and she had a crying baby onboard for a couple of hours, but her flight to Sint Maarten was otherwise uneventful. The Sint Maarten airport was, as usual, a confusing maze with no one able to give directions, but she managed to find her way to the Winair departure area and finally made it to Saba!

After getting her settled at the house, we grabbed some pizza from Amonhana and introduced her to the beauty of Colibri Bar. We had a great time but didn’t stay out too late since it had been a long day for her.
Stay tuned for more adventures with Samantha! What will we get up to? Only time will tell!
