Hey everyone, welcome back to the blog! This week’s chapter covers my first Christmas on the island, and let me tell you, it was… eventful.
Wednesday started off great! I only had a half-day at work before my Christmas break. I managed to wrangle my backlog into submission (victory!), spent some quality time on the phone with friends, and settled in for a *Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer* viewing. But alas, my viewing was thwarted by Dave’s tech woes. Seems a software update decided to wage war on his system, leading to frantic calls to tech support and then, of course, a chat with Jared. Privacy is a myth in this household due to the close quarters. So, Christmas Eve was a bit of a bust, but hey, at least the spirit was there, right?

Then came the rude awakening. I woke up in the middle of the night to find myself clinging to the edge of the bed for dear life. You see, we downgraded from a king to a queen bed when we moved, and let’s just say it’s been an adjustment. Dave and I were squished together on one side, while Albus, our furry overlord, was sprawled out on the other like Simba surveying his kingdom. It was like a furry four-legged version of “King of the World”.
Christmas Day itself was pretty chill. Dave was still battling whatever plague he’d picked up, so we stayed home, chatted with family and friends, and generally relaxed. I had grand plans to drive around and capture the island’s Christmas lights on video, but Dave wasn’t feeling up to it. Maybe next year!
But fear not, dear readers, the holiday cheer wasn’t entirely extinguished! The next day, Dave started to feel better and whisked me away for lunch at Tropics Cafe. Hooray for leaving the house! The food was delicious, the decorations were festive, and my soul was happy.

Later that day, we ventured to The Hideaway for their Boxing Day Customer Appreciation event. Free beer, homemade soup, a DJ, and $1 wings? Yes, please! But the real highlight of the night? Dave’s brush with celebrity greatness.
Picture this: a bearded gentleman approaches Dave and asks for a photo. Dave, ever the gracious guy, obliges. As they chat, Dave realizes the gentleman’s name is also David. Then, the voice, the face… it clicks! He’s talking to David Letterman! Apparently, the comedy legend was just hanging out, being super low-key and friendly. I even took the picture and had NO IDEA who it was until Dave filled me in afterward. Talk about a celebrity sighting!

After the Letterman excitement, we headed to the Swinging Doors for a quieter atmosphere and some conversation. And that’s when it hit me: I’m really loving the social vibe on this island. It’s so refreshing to be out and about, meeting new people and feeling connected to a community. My previous home was in a rural area, and the bar scene was more “fancy restaurant” than “neighborhood hangout.” It’s crazy to think that a tiny island is where I’d find this sense of belonging.
So, that’s my Christmas story from island life! A little chaotic, a little unexpected, and a whole lot of fun. What about you? How was your holiday season? Let me know in the comments below!
