At 2:30am the alarm went off so we could head to the airport for Dave’s flight. I drove him there and back, and then crashed for an hour or so once I got home. Jenn called me to check in as well, and despite being very tired, I’m doing okay. It’s a strange feeling to have mostly empty house and a husband that doesn’t live here anymore. It will be even weirder by the weekend, because Jared is moving out on Saturday, leaving just me and Albus.

Speaking of Albus, my friend Jason had a conflict crop up, so I made reservations to bring Albus to Saba myself on 11/13, flying home just two days later. It was just going to be too much to have him over Thanksgiving and the stay at my dad’s so this seemed like a better plan. Throughout the day I kept track of Dave’s progress, and everything was going smoothly until the final leg from Sint Maarten to Saba.

Dave’s 5pm flight was delayed, and he messaged me to tell me, but then I heard nothing else until 8:30pm. To allay my concerns, I checked a couple of flight trackers, but the news wasn’t helpful. Dave had mentioned a charter flight around the same time as his that made it out while his was delayed. I saw both flights, but one of the flights showed an estimated departure time of 5:30pm, but no arrival time. By 6:30pm, I was starting to freak out a bit, so I decided to check the airport website for any updates. Hilariously, the home of the world’s shortest commercial runway does not, in fact, have a website of any kind. Absent that, I tried to call the airport, and after five rings rolled over to an answering machine. Seriously?

When I did finally hear from Dave, he explained that he wasn’t able to reach out until he made it to the rental where he could access wifi. Not only did they bring him to the rental house, but they brought him to the grocery for some supplies before bringing him to our new temporary home. I was fairly exhausted from the early airport trip to drop him off and the stress of waiting to hear, so I crashed right after we spoke.

The next morning Dave & I caught up a bit more, chatting about the new place and what is needed to make it function well for us. Work was….challenging. Not sure if I mentioned, but last week involved a special project where I had to turn one 234 page pdf into 234 one page pdfs, all with very specific naming conventions on the files, and then uploaded. Well, today an error was discovered on the original document, resulting in a complete rinse repeat of the whole cumbersome process. So there went a big chunk of my afternoon, and I was happy when I finally looked up and it was almost 5pm. Woot woot!

Samantha came by for a visit, and we chatted while I enjoyed something called Mexican Shawarma, which was a burrito with shawarma, pico de gallo, cojita cheese, and all kinds of yummy goodness. It was delish! And for dessert, Samantha had brought me a fancy pumpkin cupcake. 🙂 While Samantha and I were chatting, Dave was chatting it up on the island, and he called me a bit later with new information. First, my number one housing choice has been poorly maintained, and apparently needs about $50,000 in repairs. Yikes! No thanks. A couple more options were discussed, but ultimately no decision was made on anything. Tomorrow would be soon enough to investigate further.

He also learned that there is a public shuttle right from Windwardside to the government building, so his need for a vehicle would be almost non-existent. That said, for now he decided he’d be getting around on a scooter, and he found a neat deal for one already which he’d go pick up the next day. That’s all for now! Catch me next time, where I share updates on our Saba move, as well as the details from the day after Finnegan passed, and my handling of it. Stay kind!
